Why we use it

Close-up views with precise tracking.

The Celestron NexStar 8SE is our main instrument for high-magnification observing. Its 203 mm aperture gathers enough light to reveal fine detail while the 2000 mm focal length makes it especially well suited to the Moon and planets.

Its Schmidt-Cassegrain design combines a compact tube with a long focal length. Computerised alignment and tracking allow us to locate a target and keep it centred while the participant observes, asks questions and, during suitable sessions, controls the telescope remotely.

That combination of optical performance and automated tracking makes the 8SE an excellent teaching instrument: you can move from understanding what an object is to seeing it live through the same session.
